This Powerful Hashtag Can Change The Way Women Interact With Each Other

Popular YouTube personality IISuperwomanII (Lilly Singh) is on a mission to end girl-on-girl hate. She has posted a video on her YouTube channel asking to start a viral campaign using #GirlLove. (Check out the video below.)

She explains:

“The sad reality is that girl-on-girl hate is such a big issue in schools, at work, or on-line, and it never made any sense to me because as women, we know how awesome other women can be.”

In the video, Singh enlists the help of other popular female YouTubers. Musician Lindsey Stirling says:

“We (women) are not each other’s enemies; we are each other’s allies.”

Popular vlogger Colleen Ballinger adds:

“I want women to celebrate each other’s bodies, and each other’s minds.”

Singh hopes to turn the girl-on-girl toneĀ from one of criticism, to one of celebration:

“Honestly, I don’t know who came up with this idea that it’s cool to hate on other girls, because it’s not. Ladies, it’s time to change the game and let it be known that what’s really cool is complimenting other women.”

Each of the women in the video take a turn mentioning women they admire. Fashion vlogger Shay Mitchell compliments actress Sophia Bush for her work ethic and positive outlook. Bush found out about the video and Tweeted a response thanking Mitchell and supporting the #GirlLove movement.

Other women to receive compliments in the video are Angelina Jolie, Emma Watson, and Amy Poehler.

Singh has offered all of the proceeds to the Malala Fund, Malala Yousafzai’s charity supporting girls’ education and rights internationally. The video has been viewed over 1.1 million times, as of this publication.

Although women have gained more rights in the US and internationally, women and girls as a group have been attacked and abused in public and in private. Women still face significant hurdles in the work world. Not to mention the recent attacks (both verbal and physical) against women’s health clinics.

When women attack other women, we are saying it’s okay for men to attack us. We make ourselves weaker as a group. It’s time to spread some #GirlLove!
