Howard University Students Hold ‘NO Means NO!’ Protest

Tuesday afternoon, Howard University students took the streets in protest of rape culture. Washington’s WUSA9 reports the protest is a result of students being fed up with having safety concerns ignored by university officials. A female co-ed allegedly raped by a residential adviser (RA) who has not been terminated nor suspended has students calling for immediate action.

Take Swift and Immediate Action When Assault Happens

A D.C. police report shows that an incident occurred in a campus residence hall the morning of February 8. The university released a statement Tuesday stating they are aware of the allegations and are investigating. They are unable to comment further as the investigation is underway.

More than 100 students gathered to make their voices heard. They have a list of demands that align with addressing safety issues and ending rape culture.

Take Back The Night Rallies Strengthen Campus Communities

During the month of April, campuses nationwide hold “Take Back The Night” rallies to bring attention to rape and sexual violence. Howard students are questioning the slow response to campus attacks and why the alleged perpetrator is still with a campus job where he has contact with and responsibility for students.

Standard Procedures Look Good On Paper

University officials responded with a public statement on Title IX violation. This looks fantastic on paper. In real time, the process for justice can seem agonizingly slow, especially when women feel ignored. Step up the investigation process.

Parents Need To Know Students Are Safe

Here’s the thing: Parents of freshmen and sophomore students entrust the care of their teen children to the institution. Mandatory workshops are held at the beginning of each semester where safety is discussed. What’s not happening is accountability and justice when students are violated. The problem of rape culture is not germane to Howard. When rape and assault happens, too often its swept under the carpet.

Get It Straight – No Means No!

Howard students’ message that, “NO Means NO!” is explicitly clear. Without complete consent sexual contact is not wanted. While there were a few male students speaking on behalf of women and men who face sexual harassment, protesters want to make sure everyone understands that rape is unacceptable.
