This Grandmother Went To A Gym And Freaked Out A Personal Trainer

While a large number of Americans are struggling with just getting themselves into the gym, an Illinois woman experienced a complete fitness transformation and crushed a record for deadlifting in her age group thanks to her training.

The shocking part? The woman, Shirley Webb, is a 78-year-old grandmother.

In two years, Webb has gone from her only exercise being mowing the lawn to cranking out three reps in a 225-pound deadlift. Whereas she used to have to use furniture to pull herself up if she fell or use a railing to assist in making her way up the stairs, Webb now says that she can do both all by herself.

Her trainer at Club Fitness in Wood River, Illinois says that she’s become an inspiration for a number of the gym’s visitors.

She inspires everybody that goes to the gym and it’s fun to see that.”

A video that her trainer posted to Instagram of Webb deadlifting has amassed over seventy seven thousand likes and a little short of twenty thousand comments.

According to ESPN and the New York Post, Webb has already beaten the Illinois and Missouri deadlift records for her age and weight class. But she isn’t satisfied with just smashing those records: she’s on track to crush an American record in June with a 260 pound deadlift.

Webb had never touched any weights in the gym until two years ago, but that didn’t stop her. And if you’re wondering just how much time is she putting into this intensive training that has her picking up a weight that’s heavier than a lot of us and blowing past records? Well, it just might be less than you’d think.

“I work out twice a week with my trainer, sometimes three times, and I’m just feeling great.”
