Rosario Dawson Arrested For Civil Disobedience In Democracy Spring Protest

Actress Rosario Dawson was arrested Friday for illegally crossing a police line in the volatile Democracy Spring movement, TMZ reports.

Thousands of people have been in Washington D.C. all week protesting against dirty money in politics, unfair voting practices and the over-influence of corporate media.

Dawson took to Twitter after being arrested:

Dawson was the second famous personality to get cuffed this week. Cenk Uygur, co-founder of The Young Turks Network, was arrested on Monday along with 400 other protesters. It’s estimated that close to 600 people have been arrested so far. The protests will last until April 18.

Thousands of Bernie Sanders supporters helped put together the Democracy Spring. They marched from Philadelphia to D.C. to, “demand Congress take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in politics and ensure free and fair elections in which every American has an equal voice” according to its website.

It’s expected that more than 3,500 people have “pledged to risk arrest throughout the week.”

Dawson, a well-known and admired Hollywood actress, belongs to Team Sanders.

In her interview with Uygur, Dawson explained why she’s on the Sanders bandwagon.

“[Sanders] is a candidate who I’ve looked at a long time, I’ve admired him for a long time. When he decided to run for president, and the people responded in the way they did not because of mass media … not because he has a household name but specifically because of his message and that he’s had integrity, I was so moved to be able to use whatever platform I had to amplify that voice.”

Dawson also was arrested during a protest against George W. Bush back in 2004. In that rally, she was one of about 240 people arrested in the crowd of between 120,000 to 400,000 people rallying in the streets of Manhattan according to estimates at the time.

Dawson has been a Hollywood actress since 1995 and has appeared in almost 60 films including “Kids,” “Men In Black II,” “Sin City,” and “Rent.”
