BREAKING: Malia Obama Will Attend THIS College, But Is Going To Wait A Year (VIDEO)

The oldest daughter of President Obama has decided upon her next step in education after applying for college across the east coast. Malia Obama will attend Harvard in the fall of 2017.

Harvard has an extensive list of presidential children who attended school there. This decision has come after a long period of silence on the matter.

“The President and Mrs. Obama announced today that their daughter Malia will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017 as a member of the Class of 2021. Malia will take a gap year before beginning school,” the White House said in a statement.

Malia choosing to wait a year before attending a university is a popular option among high school students. It is considered a gap year, in which graduates are persuaded to gain experiences outside of the classroom. Many times this consists of world travel.

The decision to wait a year can also relieve some of the pressure that may have fallen on Malia’s shoulders otherwise. Presidential children are still recognized after their parents leave office, but the spotlight will certainly fade.

“When you’re a presidential has-been, the rest of your life you’re famous, you’re a target, you’re in a security bubble, but it’s not the same,” said Gil Troy, a presidential historian at McGill University. “The kids can get to at least some level of irrelevance that they absolutely cannot get when they’re still in the White House.”

At 5.2 percent acceptance, Harvard has just endured its most selective year on record for students applying for college. The widely recognized university is a wonderful stepping stone for the 17 year old. The prestige that is applied to the school may also help her become more inconspicuous to focus on her studies.

Malia had taken many visits to other Ivy League and liberal arts schools before making her decision. An opportunity to continue her education at Harvard may have been too good to pass up.
