Supreme Court Justice Ted Cruz? No Thanks.

Ted Cruz bragged in one of his presidential ads that he argued nine cases in front of the Supreme Court and won.”

That is sort of true. A more accurate description would mention he won only two out of nine appearances, but that is neither here nor there at this point.

If that is as close to the Supreme Court as Ted Cruz gets, we are safe, and it seems as though it may be.

Today, in a radio interview with host Chris Salcedo, Cruz was asked about a possible appointment to the court from Donald Trump should he become president. Cruz demurred.

“That is not a desire of my heart. I’ve had several opportunities in the past to go to the bench and I certainly deeply respect the job the justices do. But I think our country is in crisis and I think we need a strong conservative president who will appoint not just one, but two, three, four, or five Supreme Court justices who are principled constitutionalists.” He went on to say, “I am committed to the fight of ensuring that we have strong constitutionalist on the court. I believe I can do a great more good fighting across the political spectrum.”

In the same interview, Cruz conceded that the courts, and the Supreme Court in particular, hold the real influence on one of his personal obsessions–ending Obamacare. Citing the recent Republican victory in court he said,

“The courts are the battleground for many of these issues. Obamacare has been a disaster…The resolution of this issue and many others is going to turn on the coming elections and ensuring that we have real conservative leadership.”

With that, Ted Cruz began in earnest to campaign for his senate seat for 2018.

“I am committed to fighting for those principles in the united states senate. It is my hope that we will see sooner rather than later a strong conservative president who will defend those principles on a daily basis.”

If Cruz is as effective in a second term as he was in his first (should he win,) progressives have nothing to worry about.
