After the last primaries are held on Tuesday, June 7, President Obama is expected to endorse Democratic front-runner by no later than Thursday of the same week, according to senior aides in the Clinton camp.
Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook told CNN:
“I think the President is going to back the nominee very quickly. I think he’ll get behind the nominee very quickly and he’ll be out there campaigning vigorously.”
Will such an endorsement anger supporters of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders? Might a third party be necessary to bridge the gap between the Clinton and Sanders camps? Mook said he didn’t see that as being required:
“I don’t think this is going to be very complicated. I don’t think this is going to be a complex process: They are going to come together. They are going to work hard together.”
Additionally, Mook said Obama’s support and campaigning on behalf of the Democratic nominee would be key as the race heads towards a November showdown with presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump:
“No one is better qualified to talk about what it takes to be our commander-in-chief, the steadiness that that requires.”
Vice President Joe Biden will also likely campaign on behalf of Clinton, especially in key battleground states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania.
