Pro-Trump African-American Pastor: Trump Needs Protection From ‘Concentrated Satanic Attack’ (VIDEO)

When most people wonder what the most cringe-worthy moment was when Donald Trump dropped in at a conference for black social conservatives, most people will pick his call for nationwide “stop-and-frisk.” Others will suggest the moment Don King likened him to “a dancing gliding and sliding n****r.” But both of those pale in comparison to something that happened at the very end. The conference’s host warned that Trump was in need of heavy-duty prayer, since was facing a concentrated attack from the very pits of hell.

Trump was one of the guests at the Midwest Vision And Values Pastors Leadership Conference in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. It was hosted by Pastor Darrell Scott of New Spirit Revival Center, one of Trump’s loudest African-American surrogates. You may recall that Scott suggested that Mexico risked getting its legs broken if it didn’t pay for Trump’s wall.

Near the end of the conference, Scott shared something a prominent pastor had told him about Trump a few years earlier. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.

Scott told his audience that when he and his wife, Belinda, met Trump sometime around 2011, a nationally prominent preacher was also on hand. That preacher, whom Scott didn’t name, told Trump that if he ever ran for president, “there’s going to be a concentrated Satanic attack against you.” That same preacher said that Trump could expect to get hit with “principalities and powers” who were going to attack him “on a level that you’ve never seen before.”

Later, Scott turned the mic over to his wife, who led the crowd in prayer as she and her husband laid hands on Trump and his running mate, Mike Pence. Belinda Scott prayed that “Your choice is this choice,” and asked God to give Trump “the anointing to lead this nation.”

This whole scene sent a chill down my spine. Scott was speaking in code–one that is all too familiar to this charismatic/pentecostal liberal. For the better part of the last three decades, the religious right has brainwashed dozens of born-again Christians into thinking that Democrats are in league with the devil because they support abortion and marriage equality. Indeed, back in 2012, one of the people who helped organize Rick Perry’s Response rallies, Alice Patterson, argued that the Democrats are actually controlled by demonic forces.

This sort of talk has been floating around black born-again circles for some time. The religious right is playing the same game that worked so well with white born-agains–use social issues to wedge blacks away from the Democrats. We’ve already seen one example of this from Trump’s other favorite African-American pastor, Mark Burns. If you’ll remember, he declared Democrats were “the enemy” in his now-infamous benediction at the Republican National Convention. By saying that Trump is under “concentrated Satanic attack,” Scott is saying the same thing. He’s just being more subtle about it. However, that doesn’t make it any less chilling.

Can you imagine if a Democratic-leaning black pastor were to suggest that the GOP was the devil? That pastor’s phone lines and social media feeds would melt. Scott should get the same treatment. This sort of divisive talk has no place in our discourse. Tell Scott what you think on Twitter and on his church’s Facebook page.

Darrell is a 30-something graduate of the University of North Carolina who considers himself a journalist of the old school. An attempt to turn him into a member of the religious right in college only succeeded in turning him into the religious right's worst nightmare--a charismatic Christian who is an unapologetic liberal. His desire to stand up for those who have been scared into silence only increased when he survived an abusive three-year marriage. You may know him on Daily Kos as Christian Dem in NC.
