You may recall that last week, the people on a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Allentown, Pennsylvania were treated to an ugly display. Before the plane took off, one of the passengers revealed himself to be a full-on bigot who had a very loud, curse-filled message for the “Hillary bitches” on board–they had to accept Donald Trump as president. He was so disruptive that he was briefly taken off the plane, but was allowed to return. One of the passengers caught the whole thing on her phone, and it went severely viral over Thanksgiving weekend.
In case you missed it, watch here.
On Monday, Delta struck fast and hard. It announced that this loudmouthed bigot will never set foot on another Delta flight again. In a memo to Delta employees, CEO Ed Bastian said that the flight crew had initially decided to let the unidentified passenger continue on to Allentown despite his “loud, rude, and disrespectful” behavior. However, Bastian said, had anyone actually seen this guy’s outrageous display first-hand, “there is no question they would have removed him from the aircraft.”
Delta had already admitted that it was a mistake to let this bigot stay on the plane. However, Bastian went further, and declared that this man “will never again be allowed on a Delta plane.” He also announced that the passengers on that flight will receive full refunds.
The (Allentown) Morning Call got more details on what led to the blowup on the plane. Emma Baum, the passenger who caught the rant on video, said that she was waiting in the terminal in Atlanta while traveling to see her parents. She noticed a man yelling “Make America great again” several times in the terminal. As luck would have it, she sat next to him on the plane. She told him that she had just returned from Belize, where she now lives, and asked about the election.
At that moment, the man jumped out of his seat, and she immediately hit the record button on her cell phone as he started his now-infamous rant. After several minutes, a flight attendant took him off the plane. However, he came back soon afterward, harrumphing that he was being persecuted for “being a patriot.” He kept quiet for the remainder of the flight. Once the plane arrived in Allentown, Baum says she reported the bigot to authorities. However, neither the police nor airport security were able to confirm that they got any report about the outburst.
Regardless of whether the police did act, it’s about time that someone took a stand against bigotry being pushed in Trump’s name. It looks like it will be a very long time before this bigot will be flying anywhere again.
