As if scientists across the country could be heard in a collective sigh when President-elect Donald Trump appointed climate denier Scott Pruitt as head of the EPA, Leonardo DiCaprio quickly swooped in and, joined by the CEO of his foundation, met with Trump at Trump Towers.
This meeting, in particular, was to discuss the ability to create jobs and a strong economic growth based around the development of clean energy systems and structures across our country. Everyone seems to think that to have progress you have to bring back coal and pump natural gas from the earth, but that would be going backward.
Trying To Soothe The Wounds
We know that Pruitt bathes, shits, and lives in the pockets of big oil which are one hundred percent of the reason he has fought against every environmental act that has come up over the last fifteen years. However, when it is all said and done the power will lie in the hands of the dictatorship that is arising in Washington, so it is imperative you strike at the source, which is exactly what Dicaprio and The Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation, LDF, is doing.
Terry Tamminen, LDF’s CEO, talked to the press about their meeting with Trump stating:
“Today, we presented the president-elect and his advisors with a framework – which LDF developed in consultation with leading voices in the fields of economics and environmentalism – that details how to unleash a major economic revival across the United States that is centered on investments in sustainable infrastructure. Our conversation focused on how to create millions of secure, American jobs in the construction and operation of commercial and residential clean, renewable energy generation.”
Climate Allies In Strange Places
It seems as if climate change may have one ally close to Trump’s ear and DiCaprio made sure he brought that ally a copy of his documentary Before The Flood. Ivanka Trump, who seems to be getting cozy in politics, has said she would speak out about our extreme climate shift, regardless of her father’s views.
If we all remember correctly, Trump believes climate change is a hoax created by the Chinese to enable their country to get ahead in the technological race and who believes there is actually something to “clean coal.”
Trump has agreed to meet with DiCaprio again once he has been sworn in, which is a glimmer of hope for those of us terrified as to what Trump’s administration will do to all of the progress we have made towards becoming a cleaner and more sustainable country.
We must embrace forward thinking even though it is often difficult not to fall back on the years of a booming economy where the country flourished. It is hard to see that even in that time we could have done better as a whole collective society. If Trump wants to create jobs and a stronger economy, going backward is going to do more harm than good.
