President-elect Donald Trump is no friend of the media. He has treated them badly during his entire campaign. At his first press conference, Trump made an ass of himself by blatantly pointing at a CNN reporter and shouting, “You are fake news.”
Newt Gingrich joined the anti-media party, and said:
“You don’t have to think of The New York Times or CNN or any of these people as news organizations. They’re mostly propaganda organizations. And they’re going to be after Trump every single day of his presidency.”
“And he needs to understand that that’s the case, and so does Sean Spicer in speaking for him. And they simply need to go out there and understand they have it in their power to set the terms of this dialogue. They can close down the elite press.”
Apparently, Gingrich thinks that he has control over CNN’s employee policies. He said that the organization should’ve suspended the reporter who Trump called out at the press conference.
After he attacked the CNN reporter, Trump took a question from Breitbart news, which is obviously pro-Trump. The president of Breitbart, Steve Bannon was tapped as Trump’s Chief of Staff at one point, so that makes sense. Luckily, Trump relegated him to a much less powerful position after Bannon set up an embarrassing photo op.
Gingrich actually went so far as to say that Trump should stop taking questions from the major news outlets.
Fox News pundit Sean Hannity implied that the mainstream media shouldn’t be reporting on Trump when he said:
“Trump can do this and speak directly to you, the America people, without having his words twisted and taken out of context. Why not do that?”
“So until members of the media come clean about colluding with the Clinton campaign and admit that they knowingly broke every ethical standard they are supposed to uphold, they should not have the privilege, they should not have the responsibility of covering the president on behalf of you, the American people.”
I guess Trumplethinskin can’t handle being criticized, so he’s just going to try and censor the media and give more attention to the news outlets that treat him favorably. We will have to fight to keep all of our rights in this administration very hard to retain freedom of the press.
