In an interview with Chris Hayes on Friday, Michael Moore really impressed upon Democrats and liberals that now is the time to push for a single payer healthcare plan. Trumpcare failed, but now is not the time to stay complacent.
“The good news is that the millions of people who are beneficiaries of Obamacare are not going to be thrown out on the curb tonight, or tomorrow night or anytime soon. So that’s great news, everybody can feel good about that. But this is not the time for the Democrats to gloat.”
It is important to take note of the reasons why Republicans could not achieve consensus on this bill. Conservative Republicans felt the bill did not go far enough in removing coverage for preexisting conditions, or removing the option that children can stay on their parent’s insurance until 26 years of age. The White House said they were even willing to remove the Essential Benefits Package from the bill like pediatric, emergency, and maternity coverage – the basics that are normally covered!
This still didn’t appease them!
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) met with moderate Republicans in hopes that they could find some common ground on the legislation. However, the result of this two-and-a-half hour meeting over pizza was no consensus.
Representative Charlie Dent, (R-Pa.), stated:
“I believe this bill, in its current form, will lead to the loss of coverage and make insurance unaffordable for too many Americans, particularly for low-to-moderate income and older individuals.”
Moore shared this about the ACHA,
“Only 17 percent liked the Republican plan … People are starting to get it. We have to get out there and push for the real fix. We are the majority and can fight for these things.”
He was emphatic that now is the time for a huge push,
“…Because please understand that Trump is telling you the truth when he says that Obamacare is going to explode or implode … It will do one of those things because they are going to actively make sure that that happens.”
Democrats are already actively working on Medicare-for-All legislation. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has plans to introduce a single payer bill, and Representative John Conyers (D-Mi.) has already reintroduced a bill.
If plenty of people want to fix Obamacare and are disgusted by the idea of Trumpcare, now is the prime time to rally behind something that will truly help the majority of the American people.
