Donald Trump is still doing his level best to make life worse for as many people as possible. In his first three months, he has rolled back virtually every limit to corporate greed and filled our streams with coal waste.
Now the blustering buffoon has set his sights on the education of young girls around the world.
Why would anyone, even someone who seems to have a heart of granite, want to stop girls from going to school?
Because the program that is helping them was started by Michelle Obama. Anything done by the Obamas is like kryptonite to Trump. He can’t stand to let them have one single success.
The program under fire is called “Let Girls Learn.” It is a multi-agency, international effort to help lift girls around the world out of poverty by providing them access to education.
Here is a full description of the program, taken from their website:
“In March 2015, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama launched Let Girls Learn, which brings together the Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Peace Corps, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), as well as the U.S. President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), to address the range of challenges preventing adolescent girls from attaining a quality education that empowers them to reach their full potential. Let Girls Learn combines the necessary political will, diplomacy, grassroots organizing, and development expertise to create lasting change.”
So far, Trump has given no reason for ending this life changing program. But he has made it clear that while some parts of the effort will continue, the name is being dropped immediately. “Let Girls Learn” will cease to exist as an independent program.
The program was highly successful in its short time in operation. Under the guidance of Mrs. Obama and her husband, it reached girls in developing nations around the world. And it was supported by increasing amounts of private donations, especially as its popularity and progress were noted.
When the Trump administration was asked to explain why they would suddenly cut off such a vital international effort, they referred the question to the office of the First Lady, Melania Trump.
She had no comment.
Neither did Ivanka Trump, the President’s favorite child and close advisor. The one who has promised to make improving the lives of women and girls her primary focus.
Too bad nobody had the foresight to change the name from “Let Girls Learn” to “Trump’s School for Girls.” He probably would have let it go.
