Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday morning, and she quickly walked into a line of questions she clearly wasn’t prepared for.
Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy (VT) asked Nielsen about President Trump’s comments on immigrants from “shithole” countries not being welcome in the United States. Nielsen replied by telling Leahy:
“I did not hear that word. The conversation was very impassioned, I don’t dispute that the president was using tough language, others in the room were also using tough language.”
Nielsen also defended her boss by saying that he wanted to move to a merit-based system of immigration, but her comment drew a sharp retort from Senator Leahy:
“He didn’t say we needed more Ph.D. students or skilled workers, he said he wanted more people from Norway. Being from Norway is not a skill, and with the standard of living in Norway better than ours, you’re not going to have many people from there.”
And then Leahy cut the Homeland Security chief to the quick with this question:
“Norway is a predominantly white country, isn’t it?”
Stammering as she responded, Nielsen finally managed to say:
“I actually don’t know that, sir, but I imagine that is the case.”
This woman is the head of Homeland Security and she doesn’t know whether or not Norway is predominantly white?! Is this the person who needs to be in charge of American security in the areas of immigration and travel, along with the other departments that fall under her supervision?
Ever since Trump made his hateful, racist comments last week, Republicans have been tying themselves in knots as they attempt to defend him or pretend they didn’t hear what he said. Every single one of these spineless sycophants needs to be washed away with a blue wave of Democratic votes in 2018
