In a Tuesday morning press conference, Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) pointed out that the folks who are saying Democrats should “just wait” on impeachment are simply arguing that Trump should be allowed to cheat “one more time” in the 2020 election.

As of Tuesday, House Democrats have made a formal announcement of articles of impeachment against Pres. Donald J. Trump. Schiff accurately rebutted the continued plea that Democrats should “just wait” to impeach Trump, arguing that those who are saying “just wait” are actually saying that they’d like to give Trump time to cheat in one more election. To solicit foreign help “just one more time.
“Some say why don’t you just wait. Why don’t you just wait until you get the witnesses that the White House refuses to produce? Why not just wait until you get the documents that the white house refuses to turn over, and people should understand what that argument really means.
It has taken us eight months to get a lower court ruling that Don McGahn has no right to defy Congress if it takes another eight months to get a second court or Supreme Court decision, that is not the end of the process. It comes back to us, and we ask questions because he no longer has immunity and he claims something else that his answers are privileged and we have to go to court for another eight or 16 months.
The argument why don’t you just wait amounts to this: Why don’t you just let him cheat in one more election?”
Why not late him cheat just one more time? Why not let him have foreign help just one more time? That is what that argument amounts to.
Here’s why Schiff’s statement matters so much. For the first time in his life, Donald Trump is being formally and legally called what he is: a cheat. For the first time in his life, Donald Trump is being held accountable.
Will Donald Trump pay the ultimate price and lose his job because of this? Probably not. We all know the GOP-controlled Senate will not likely remove this shameful president from office. However, his rightful place in the history books will be secure. This also sends a strong message to all future presidents: justice will be served.
