Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ As A Romantic Comedy?! Believe It

“The Shining” is, in my humble opinion, one of the most chilling and brilliantly made movies of the past 50 years. Yes, I know many Stephen King purists will disagree with me, and I both understand and appreciate their lack of enthusiasm for Stanley Kubrick’s interpretation of the book.

But now it’s my turn to be outraged. Because it seems a man named Robert Ryang decided to re-cut the horror film and make it into a romantic comedy. I’m pretty sure the late Stanley Kubrick must be spinning in his grave at helicopter speed.

Instead of the story being about a man suffering from writer’s block who loses his mind while he and his family serve as the caretakers of a haunted hotel for the winter, in Ryang’s version the writer gets inspiration from the hotel and a little boy searches for a father. Cue syrupy music.

I have to admit that when I first read about this remake of what I consider to be a classic film, I was extremely skeptical. I even recall telling a colleague, “This is a bridge too far!” But then I watched the trailer and was hooked. I think you will be, too.

If you want to sample this new version of “The Shining,” look no further than the clip below. Enjoy!
