Last night, America crowned?Nina Davuluri as its new Miss America, and what should have been an evening of joy and celebration quickly turned into one of the most ugly and racist events the internet has ever witnessed. ?You see, although?Nina Davuluri was born and raised in the USA, her Indian ancestry did not sit well with racist America and they took to Twitter to make their opinion known.
The only thing more embarrassing about these tweets, is the fact that as an Indian-American,?Nina Davuluri is not a Muslim. ?She’s a Hindu and she practices Hinduism.
Not that it should matter either way though.
Moments just after winning Miss America, Nina Davuluri was quoted as saying:
“I’m so happy this organisation has embraced diversity,” 24-year-old Nina Davuluri said in her first press conference, moments after winning the crown in Atlantic City. “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”
And as a testament to her grace and charm, she maintained her dignity after the racist attacks by simply stating:
“I have to rise above that,” she said. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
That my friends, is what a real American sounds like.
