Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road?

Pedestrians, and apparently chickens,?can be some of the most dangerous road hazards when driving. If you hit a pedestrian, regardless of where they are walking, it can mean huge fines, loss of driving privileges, and even time in a federal prison. So, you’re probably wondering,??What does that have to do with chickens??

Well, police in Lake Elsinore, California decided to don a bright yellow chicken suit and walk leisurely across the street. The point of the operation was to bring awareness to Lake Elsinore residents on pedestrian safety, and have them slow down when driving through the city, especially in school zones.

Thirty one tickets later, and the Lake Elsinore Police Department realized no one really pays attention at all. Lake Elsinore Police Sargent, Peter Giannakakos, commented on the lack of attention by saying:

Even though the decoy was wearing a bright yellow costume, most drivers stated they did not see him crossing the road.

This operation came to fruition after the police department had received several complaints of speeding and pedestrian safety in school zones. However, this was not a surprise attack on Elsinore residents. The police department had put out a press release telling residents that the event would be taking place on the 24th in an undisclosed location. This didn’t seem to slow anyone down, or make them aware of giant chickens crossing the road, though.

Pedestrian safety is important, but now I fear even more for our small feathered friends. If that had been a real chicken, Lake Elsinore might have been mourning a loss instead of paying a fine. Drive safe people.
