In a new liberal ad sponsored by Americans United for Change (AUFC), viewers are urged to demand that Republicans restore unemployment insurance?benefits to the 1.3 million Americans who will be losing them starting December 28.
The ad reminds us that Congress “protected billions in taxpayer giveaways” to the wealthiest 1 percent while failing to extend assistance to unemployed Americans “who want to work but can’t find a job.” President Obama is pushing Congress to reconsider allowing the benefits to lapse, calling it an “urgent economic priority.”
Without this assistance many hundreds of thousands of individuals and families actively seeking work that provides a livable wage will find it even more difficult to pay their rent or mortgage, not to mention utilities, car payments and food. Most unemployment benefit recipients already live as frugally as they possibly can and cannot trim any more expenses.
In their own effort to trim expenses, the GOP once again tells the nation that the lives of struggling American families are infinitely less important to them than their billionaire campaign donors. Let voters not forget this during next year’s congressional elections.
