Is Your Cheese Killing You?

Twice. That’s how many times since 2011 the F.D.A. has shut down a plant due to sickness and/or deaths related to product. The first was in November 2012, due to an outbreak of salmonella from peanut butter sold by Trader Joe’s and manufactured in New Mexico. This time was due to an outbreak of listeria that resulted in the death of one person and seven others becoming sickened. Roos Food in Kenton, Delaware was shuttered due to unsanitary conditions, a leaking roof and rusting or deteriorating equipment. .

Listeria is a food borne illness that is especially dangerous to pregnant women, newborn babies and those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea and can typically be treated with antibiotics.

According to the company’s website, they ship to South Carolina, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Maryland, New York, Boston, California and New Jersey.

Any recalled product, under the names, Amigo. Mexicana, Santa Rosa de Lima, La Chapina, Suyapa and La Purisima Crema Nica should be immediately discarded and any utensils that have come in contact with these products should be thoroughly cleaned using one tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water.
