The Politics Of Internet Love: OKCupid Takes A Stand Against Mozilla CEO

If you use Mozilla Firefox to browse the web you’ll find an interesting launch screen at OkCupid. It seems they don’t want that browser accessing their website. The reason? Mozilla appointed a new CEO last week, Brendan Eich. There is a letter there from OkCupid explaining why you’re seeing the screen and their concerns about Brenden Eich running the company that produces one of the most popular web browsers in the world.

Eich is against equal rights for same sex couples. He donated $1,000 to support Proposition 8, the California law that banned same sex marriage. Since Eich was made the new CEO of Mozilla, the rest of the Internet has made their objections very clear. OkCupid responded by blocking Firefox from accessing their website, and they ask people visiting OkCupid to consider a different browser, providing download links. There is a link at the bottom of the letter that allows Firefox users to click through and still access the website.

Apparently OkCupid doesn’t think too highly of Internet Explorer either, they call it ?Internet Exploder.?

Both Mozilla and Eich have made public statements that they have no intention of discriminating against anyone who uses their browser, but some are still not happy about Mozilla’s choice for CEO. Brendan Eich, despite his statements that Mozilla Firefox will never be anti-gay is still remembered as someone who supported one of the most hated same sex marriage bans in the United States. Mozilla’s new CEO may be a liability for the company if more object to his new position.
