US Postal Service Will Issue Harvey Milk Commemorative Stamp This Spring

The U.S. Postal Service has unveiled the design for the Harvey Milk commemorative stamp. The Postal Service?will issue the new stamp on?May 22nd of this year. The stamp will feature an image of Milk with the colors of the pride flag adorning the upper left hand corner of the stamp. The commemorative stamp will be a “forever stamp”, and it will first be made available to the public on Harvey Milk Day, which is May 22nd.

The Harvey Milk stamp will be the first postage stamp to honor an openly gay elected official. Voters elected?Harvey Milk to serve on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. An ex-city supervisor,?Dan White, assassinated Milk on November 27th, 1978. President Barack Obama ?posthumously awarded Harvey Milk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. Milk has long been an iconic figure in the struggle for LGBT equality. The commemorative stamp will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices gay activists have made?on the road to progress for LGBT rights in America.
