This Harsh Parody Of A Women’s Magazine Cover Is Hilariously Accurate

I’ve always said “Want to know the state of women in this country? Look around you as you’re standing in the check-out at the grocery store.” I’m not talking about the people in line — I’m talking about the magazines.

Writer and illustrator Brendan McGinley agrees. He’s created a parody markup of the “average women’s magazine cover” and exposed the harsh reality of women’s magazines, particularly the covers. It was originally created in 2010, but resurfaced in recent months.

Most women’s magazines seem to have three broad messages:

  1. Look better than you do.
  2. Be better at everything.
  3. Please your man.

How is this empowering? I love magazines, actually. I?get some great ideas from magazines. We just need to recognize that the “ideal” portrayed on the covers of these magazines isn’t realistic. With magazines, the key is to take what works for you and ignore the rest.

Here is McGinley’s awesome cover.
