A study by the Guttmacher Institute has revealed that sex education in the U.S. is dangerously lacking, and even shockingly non-factual and non-scientific in many cases.
Many states don’t require any type of sex education in schools, and in many, if it is required, it’s not required to be medically accurate. Some key findings from the study:
- Only 22 states and the District of Columbia mandate sex education.
- Only 20 states and the District of Columbia mandate both sex education and HIV education.
- Only 13 states require that the instruction be medically accurate.
- Only 18 states and the District of Columbia require that information on contraception be provided.
- 25 states require that abstinence be stressed, but only?13 states require the inclusion of information on the negative outcomes of teen sex and pregnancy.
- 19 states require that instruction on the importance of engaging in sexual activity only within marriage be?provided.
- 3 states require only negative information on sexual orientation.
Very disturbing. The maps are below.
