I know my dog loves me, and no doubt your dog loves you, too. But do you suppose your dog would walk 20 blocks in the cold to visit you if you were in the hospital? Well an adorable 10-year-old miniature schnauzer named Sissy did. Now she’s the toast of the town, and a big star to boot.

Sissy showed up at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where her owner, Nancy Franck, was being treated for cancer. When Sissy appeared, Franck said she just assumed her daughter, Sarah Wood, had managed to sneak the dog into the hospital without permission:

“I said, ‘Did you sneak this dog in?’ Sarah said, ‘No, [Sissy] snuck herself in.’ Set the door off ? she got in by herself, too. So, she was on a mission.”

Franck said the visit from her pet was a “big boost,” and even more so because earlier in the day her husband, Dale, was sure Sissy had run away. He had taken Sissy and another dog named Barney outside to do their business in the yard, but when it came time to let the pooches back in the house, only Barney showed up.

Even though pets are not allowed the same visitation rights as humans, the staff at Mercy Medical let Sissy visit briefly with Franck before she was taken back home.

Franck’s daughter says she’s quite sure Sissy had one awesome story to tell Barney when she arrived back at the Franck house:

“I’m sure when Sissy got home, she told Barney, ‘Guess who I got to see, and what I got to do, and where I went?'”

Franck says she is still amazed by what her canine buddy accomplished:

“I didn’t think they could do it. I thought dogs could find their way home, but this one found the hospital.”

Is it any wonder dogs are called Man’s Best Friend? It’s certainly not to Nancy Franck.
