Rock band Foo Fighters were playing a gig in Kansas City Friday night, and when they saw some protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church nearby, they decided to give them a little bit of rock and trolling as an antidote.
The band showed up in the bed of a truck and blasted the hateful fundamentalists with a recording of “Never Gonna Give You Up” as fans delightfully laughed and applauded.
Westboro Baptist Church has a rocky relationship with the Foo Fighters — as well as everyone else who disagrees with their virulent brand of homophobic hatred — and were also the butt of a prank by the band in 2011. That time, the Foo Fighters serenaded the Westboro protesters with a version of “Keep It Clean (Hot Buns).”
On Friday, the band pulled up in front the protesters — carrying their “God hates f*gs” signs, as they always do— who were mixed in with Foo fans, dancing in the bed of the truck and blasting Rick Astley’s 1987 hit song while holding up signs reading:
“You got rick roll’d. Again.”
“Rickrolling” refers to hyperlinking to the video of Astley singing his biggest hit while in the midst of an unrelated topic as a prank.
