A New Jersey High school football quarterback died Friday night, after suffering a hit in the team’s most recent game. Evan Murray, a three sport athlete at Warren Hills Regional High School, had been the team’s starting quarterback for three years.

Superintendent Gary Bowen said

“The school community is deeply saddened by his death.”

However, Bowen declined to take questions from reporters Saturday, saying that the cause of death has not yet been determined.

Bystanders said that Murray left the field on his own power after taking a hit in the backfield late in the second quarter before collapsing a short time later.

Murray had felt uneasy after a tackle but reassured his teammates that he was okay as he was lifted on a gurney and taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Kaitlin Bell, 16, a junior varsity cheerleader said,

“He tried giving a thumbs-up to the rest of the team, and all of us cheered. Our coach was telling us he was going to be all right. We didn’t expect anything would happen.”

Taylor Coughlin, a 16-year-old junior at the school also said she had first met Murray in the seventh grade. She said he was,

“an amazing student and an amazing athlete. He stood out in his athletics, his academics — everything.”

It’s quite unfortunate that this had to happen to such a young individual. My feelings go out to his family and the community. The exact cause of death is unknown until an autopsy is performed.
