Things Heat Up At Rams Vs Steelers When Field Catches Fire

Sunday’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis Rams had an unexpected delay after the turf caught fire from pregame pyrotechnics.

The Rams were introducing their starting offense about 10 minutes before kickoff when a flame fromĀ a machine that is supposed to spit fire into the air caught the turf.

An employee quickly ran onto the field to extinguish the fire, but the residue left a mess about 10 feet wide.

Nevertheless, the crew went to work and said that in less than 10 minutes they’d have it going. However, that view was optimistic and kickoff didn’t take place until 1:28pm.

In a statement released Sunday, the Rams blamed the fire on

“[A] pyrotechnic cart malfunction that resulted in the turf catching fire briefly. The fire was quickly extinguished by field staff. Out of an abundance of caution for player safety, the game was delayed to clean any residue from the turf. NFL officials were involved from the onset to monitor the cleanup process and approve the game to begin when it was deemed safe,”

The better question is: Why do you have a machine that spits fire? I mean, lets all be reasonable here. That just doesn’t make sense to me. But, hey, the game went off without a hitch from that point on. The bad news is that the Rams still ended up losing 21-6.
