On Saturday, Oct. 17, an accident took place near Granbury, Texas that left two injured and a driver without remorse for having swerved into the motorcyclists.
68-year-old William Crum has been arrested and faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for having caused the accident which left 37-year-old Eric Sanders and 38-year-old Debra Simpson wrecked on the side of Tin Top Highway. Both were injured in the accident. Sanders has a “gouge in [his] elbow that is bone deep” while Simpson was transported to the ICU at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. Doctors are observing Simpson closely.
According to Sanders, the doctors “are worried about infection.” If an infection manifests in her road-ravaged arm, “they’re going to have to amputate it.”

The accident was caught on the helmet camera of Sanders’ friend. Sanders’ bike crossed the center line of the two-lane Tin Top Highway in an effort to pass Crum’s sedan. As Sanders was passing, Crum suddenly swerved into the motorcycle, which threw Sanders and Simpson onto the street and ultimately onto the side of the road. Sanders’ friend approached Crum’s sedan following the accident.
“What are you doing? You hit them,” you can hear the friend say.
“I don’t care,” the driver of the car says.
According to Crum, he swerved because he was being bitten by a spider at the exact moment Sanders and Simpson were passing him. From CBSDFW.com:
“‘Spiders there… or the bite, whatever it [sic] bit me,’ he said. When asked if he had a mark on his leg, he said, ‘It’s swollen right now. It bit me right in the tendon, so right now I have a tendon that’s hurting if I stand. If I walk off I’ll limp.'”
Eric Sanders isn’t buying what William Crum is trying to sell and for good reason, in this writer’s opinion anyway. To me, it seems a little convenient that William Crum was being bitten by a spider (or stung by a wasp, depending on the source) at the exact moment Eric Sanders passed him. Now that the DPS investigation has turned into an arrest and filed charges, I’m a little less inclined to believe Crum’s story.
