Child Hero Dies Saving His Little Sister In Hit And Run

A heroic 11-year old boy has died in a hit and run after pushing his sister out of the way of the oncoming car.

La’Darious Wylie had just finished school and was waiting for the bus with his 7-year old sister, Sha’vonta. A car was speeding towards them, and the 11-year old hero managed to push his sister out of the way before being hit by the car. He was taken to the hospital in Chester, South Carolina but died the next day.

The driver, Michelle Johnson, fled the scene after running La’Darious over but was soon apprehended. She has since been charged with a felony count of hit and run resulting in death. If convicted, she could face up to 25 years in prison. She was able to post her $25,000 bail the next day.

Moving tributes were given at La’Darious’ funeral including several from his classmates and friends.

A friend from Chester Elementary School had this to say about the heroic La’Darious:

“That was so brave,” said Christina Johnson, 12. “La’Darious was a great person. I am so proud of him.”

Classmate Shydem Malick McCollough said:

“He showed good citizenship in helping his sister and getting her out of harm’s way.”

La’Darious regularly went to Chester’s Brooklyn Park to play sports. A Civic Group in Chester has planned a rally to urge Chester City Council to re-name the park after La’Darious.

We, as human beings, could all learn a lot from this heroic child. To have the courage to run into the face of danger to save another human being is not something we can all confidently say we would do. Our hearts go out to him and may his soul rest in perfect peace. A memorial fund has been set up at gofundme.com for La’Darious. Please contribute whatever you can.
