UC Berkeley Sees Another Suspicious Campus Death

Authorities responded to a call on Saturday at the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity House at the University of California Berkeley campus. Around 7:30AM as the officers arrived on scene, they found an unresponsive 23 year old male. According to Berkleyside, the attempt to resuscitate the young man was unsuccessful.

This on campus tragedy comes almost exactly a year after another UC Berkeley student, San Ramon, was found dead at the bottom of a brick staircase with high levels of alcohol in his system. That death came after another UC Berkeley student was found dead at the Zeta Psi fraternity house in November 2014.

According to the University of California spokeswoman, the deceased was not a student at UC Berkeley.

“UC Berkeley is awaiting further details regarding the reported death of a young man near the UC Berkeley campus on December 19, 2015. The available information is that the deceased was not a current UC Berkeley student. As information becomes available, we will provide updates… Our hearts go out to all the deceased’s families, friends and loved ones.”

According to this document sent out by the Berkeley City Manager, 95% of all injuries nationwide at fraternity houses are caused by either alcohol or drug use. While the cause of death for the most recent death is unknown, authorities are calling the death “suspicious.”

The Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity was founded in 1904 at College of Charleston in Charleston, SC.
