Some days I’m very optimistic about the future of mankind and civilization; about how we’ll all one day learn to cooperate with one another, love each other, cherish each person for their true inner worth regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender, disability, etc.

Today is NOT one of those days, unfortunately.

Last month in Fremont County, Iowa,  John Moyer, who is white, allegedly confronted a black man, Cleo Henry, at Cubby’s gas station.

Mr. Henry told police that he was parked at one of the fuel pumps when Moyer approached him, started an argument, and then used a racial slur.

But Moyer was far from finished: He also sprayed Henry with diesel fuel, got into his car, and drove off.

No doubt you’re thinking what I was at this point: WTF?!

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office was able to identify Moyer as the assailant. He was charged with suspicion of assault causing bodily injury in violation of individual rights. After being booked, Moyer, who is originally from Jonesboro, Arkansas, was released from custody on a $2,000 cash-only bail.

What was the point of all this? When I pump my gas at a gas station, if I see another person, I nod to them and sometimes ask how they’re doing. 99 percent of people will smile back and respond. Is this unique to those who were born in the South? I don’t think it is.

But we need to remember each and every day that we are on this earth together, and treat one another with the decency and respect we want others to show to us. Is that really asking for too much?
