Would Bernie supporters see this as the perfect presidential ticket?
Bernie Sanders appeared on The Nightly Show and answered questions from the panel about the current presidential race. He described the Trump tactic of blaming Latinos and Muslims for all of the country’s problems as “demagoguery” and “scapegoating,” and addressed the gender pay gap succinctly and with passion. The best moment came, however, when he was asked about a possible running mate.
“Jordan Carlos: I’m just saying that a lot of people would like you to probably join up with somebody whose name rhymes with “Elizabeth Schmarren” or something like that. I’m just…I’m putting that out there.
Larry Wilmore: Have you put some thought into a running mate and would you ever hint about something like that to maybe get people…?
Bernie Sanders: Now the last time I was on your show, you got me to say I was thinking about running, now you wanna…
Larry Wilmore: That’s right, now something else is coming out! Come on, Bernie!
Bernie Sanders: Let me just say this: Elizabeth Warren is a very good friend of mine and I’ve known Elizabeth for a very long time, before she was in the Senate. She is a great United States senator. She has stood up to Wall Street, stood up to big money interests. So, she is a…she and I will work together.”
As recently as December 2015, Warren stated that she wasn’t ready to endorse a candidate yet and seems to be holding back in order to help solidify support around the eventual nominee. Her support of Bernie’s message and proposed policies, however, comes through loud and clear when asked about him.
“Bernie is doing what Bernie always does — he’s out there talking from the heart, raising the issues that he’s raised for decades now. That’s just who he is.”
