Missing Democratic Ballots Cause Confusion At Florida Poll

Why is it that Florida just cannot seem to hold an election without some kind of controversy? Is it the heat, the humidity, or just the overall ignorance of poll workers and state officials?

Yesterday in Polk County, Florida, Theresa Wilbert was told by a poll worker that she and her husband could not vote Democratic in the primary because the election was for Republicans only. As Wilbert recalls:

“The boss came over and said we could vote for Republicans only, I couldn’t believe it. I told them I wasn’t leaving … It sure wasn’t politically correct.”

Wilbert also said she’s convinced that had she not insisted on a Democratic ballot, she would have been forced to vote Republican or not vote at all:

“We would have been turned away if we weren’t forceful about it.”

Poll workers were finally able to locate Democratic ballots, but Wilbert was amazed by where they found them:

“We pushed it a little further and the lady called a few people. Finally, she looked in the bottom of a closet and found a box with the Democratic ballots. Then they fixed it, so we were able to vote for our candidate.”

Lori Edwards, Polk County Supervisor of Elections, said the entire matter was no big deal:

“It was a mistake. It was an unfortunate mistake and it got corrected immediately.”

Ms. Wilbert, however, disagrees with the elections official in her county:

“I think it’s terrible, and I think people that aren’t educated or don’t know what’s going on, might have just voted for whoever. It’s suspect.”
