BREAKING: Active Shooter In Texas Walmart, Love Triangle Cited

On Tuesday morning at 9:40 a.m. CST, 55-year-old Donald Ray Coleman walked into the garden center of the Walmart in Kaufman, Texas and — without saying a word — fired his gun, with multiple shots, at an employee of the Walmart, 59-year-old John Morgan. He then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the head.

The victim died at the scene and the shooter was transported via helicopter to a Dallas hospital, where he is in unknown condition at this time.

Schools in Kaufman were put on temporary lockdown, but are back up and running now. Kaufman High School and Normal Junior High are less than one mile from the Walmart.

The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that police were called to the scene after someone reported shots fired. Multiple witnesses were in the garden center area at the time, but no one else was targeted.

From WFAA:

“At this time, we understand there was an ongoing feud between the subjects,” he said. “As you can understand, the investigation is very early and we’re still looking into that.”

The men were friends and neighbors in Henderson County, but had an ongoing dispute. From CBSLocal:

“There has been some past history between the two,” said Capt. Ed Black with the Kaufman Police Department. “Both men are from Henderson County.”

One Twitter user reports that the Gun Barrel City Police Department said the two men were in a “love triangle” and had an incident involving guns and drinking in December.

Walmart has issued a statement:

“We’re deeply saddened by the tragic situation that occurred in our store today. We’re assisting law enforcement however we can and our thoughts are with the families and our associates at this time.”

This hits close to home for me. We live in Kaufman, and my kid was on lockdown at a school less than a mile from where this occurred. I shop at that Walmart. Yay, Texas. And the “responsible gun owner” was probably legally carrying his gun, too. I’ll update and let you guys know more as I learn more.
