Clinton Spokesman Accuses Sanders Of ‘Rigging The System’

With the New York primary now just a week away, the back-and-forth between the Democratic candidates seems to have died down some, but their surrogates are now making news.

Brian Fallon, the press secretary for the Clinton campaign, said on CNN earlier this morning that while Bernie Sanders has accused the Democratic Party of rigging the nomination process in favor of Clinton with the use of superdelegates, it’s actually Sanders who is attempting to rig the process since Clinton has substantially more votes than the Vermont Senator:

“Really, I think when you talk about rigging the system, that’s what Sen. Sanders is trying to do now. Hillary Clinton has won in the popular vote by a wide margin. She’s got more than 2 million votes over Sen. Sanders in all of the contests when you add them all up.”

Consequently, Fallon continued, Sanders has been forced to:

“Go out and talk about the idea that he wants to try to flip superdelegates and get him to overturn the will of the people as expressed through who’s won the most contests.”

That’s actually a very fair point. Clinton had indeed received millions more votes than Sanders, and it remains to be seen if Sanders can actually get superdelegates already pledged to Clinton to back away from their promise and now rally to his cause. A big win by Clinton in New York would serve to reassure those superdelegates that Clinton’s bid for the nomination is back on track. A loss to Sanders could be devastating and might lead to a contested Democratic convention.
