The nutty Fox News host, Greta Van Susteren, claims that Obama is “stupid” and is “dividing the country” by putting a black woman on the $20 bill. She is taking the classic Fox News classic stance of “blame everything on Obama” and “the Obama administration is racist.”
She says she is a feminist and she admits that Tubman was a courageous woman. Van Susteren believes that Tubman should get her own bill; for instance, she might like to see Tubman on her own $25 or something similar.
Here is the whole quote:
“Rather than dividing our country between those who happen to like the tradition of our currency and want President Andrew Jackson to stay put and those who want to put a woman on a bill…It’s so easy to keep everyone happy! We could put a woman on a bill, Tubman, acknowledge her courage but give Tubman her own bill like a $25 bill. We could use a $25 bill. Put her picture on that and we could all celebrate. That’s the smart and easy thing to do”
Andrew Jackson was a slave owner, and Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist. I guess the conservatives are going to use this to argue about race and slavery. The Civil War is over!
Some people are taking to Twitter with racist hashtags such as “WarOnWhites” and “WhiteGenocide.” How dare we try and make progress?! How dare we honor a black woman? I guess these RWNJ’s want to go back into the 50s and 60s.
Putting Tubman on the bill was not a quick decision. There was a vote held by the organization Women on 20s. There were fifteen ladies to choose from; Harriet Tubman beat out Eleanor Roosevelt with thirty-four percent of the vote. Here is the statement from Business Insider:
“The push to put a woman on the printed US currency has been in progress for some time. In March, the organization Women on 20s began asking the public to vote for top female candidates to replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
Among the 15 women included in the vote were Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Clara Barton, and Harriet Tubman. In May it was revealed that Tubman edged out Roosevelt with almost 34% of the vote.”
So, Ms. Van Susteren, you are wrong. Obama had nothing to do with putting Tubman on the money.
