We Are Living In LGBT History – Is This A New Civil Rights Movement?

In the ’50s and ’60s, we experienced a Civil Rights Movement. Black people were fighting for basic rights. There were segregated bathrooms, water fountains, schools, and many other segregated things. There were also many racist people who were against the Civil Rights Movement.

We look at those people today and think, “Wow! Those people were so ignorant!” We all think of racist people as ignorant. We didn’t legalize interracial marriage until 1967 with the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia.

In the modern era, we have another community fighting for their rights. People in the LGBT community are fighting for basic rights. We don’t have segregated water fountains or schools, but it took until 2015 for them just to have the right to get married. The Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges.

Unfortunately, members of the LGBT community are often victims of violence. Last month, we had the horrific massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Homophobia still runs rampant. Blogger Martin Pousson of the Advocate said:

“When the summer of 2016 is recounted, our stories shouldn’t be told only by LGBT people; they should be remembered and recounted by an entire nation. All of us must write over straightwashed trees with loud purple colors.”

The Republicans are still trying to push these discriminatory laws through Congress.

We spent a lot of this year fighting anti-transgender hatred in the form of ridiculous bathroom bills. North Carolina passed a stupid bill, HB 2, forcing transgender people to use the bathroom corresponding to their birth gender, not the gender that they identify with now. President Obama spoke out against this bill.

These people fighting against the LGBT community are on the wrong side of history. A 2016 Gallup poll showed that 61 percent of Americans are in favor of same-sex marriage. These GOP nuts fighting against their rights will look stupid when LGBT rights are equal everywhere. Well, they look stupid now, but they will look like the white protestors in Civil Rights marches.

These are protestors from the Civil Rights movement then, don’t they look like idiots?
