Solange Knowles, younger sister of Beyoncé’ announced on Instagram that she has moved her banking business to a Black-owned bank. Solange, a co-founder of Saint Heron Records, acted to walk the talk she had shared in earlier posts on social media.

In these posts, she said that Black people need to take control of their lives, own their work, and support Black-owned businesses. Here’s an example:

While I realize that this is a very personal decision to make and to share, I’m proud to say that I made this step today … Time to literally put my money where my mouth is.”

To encourage her fans to take this step with her, she posted a list of Black-owned banks on the Saint Heron web site. Solange added that she did not endorse any of the banks. Instead, she was sharing information from a 2013 article in HBCU Money.

She did not mention either the bank she left or the specific Black-owned bank she chose.

A growing movement. By switching to a Black-owned bank, Solange added her name to the list of Black artists who “bank Black.” Usher, Killer Mike, and Jermaine Dupri kicked off Black History Month by walking into Citizens Trust Bank in Atlanta together to open accounts.

According to Home Rule, Usher’s statements focused on financial self-empowerment for Black people, while Killer Mike emphasized the investments that the bank would make locally to improve communities in Atlanta.
