New Polling Shows Lead Widening For One Presidential Candidate

Yes, Virginia, there is a such thing as a convention bounce.

The newest poll from CBS News shows that Hillary Clinton did indeed get a nice bump in the polls at the conclusion of the Democratic National Convention and now leads GOP nominee Donald Trump by seven points, 46 to 39 percent.

A post-convention poll from RABA Research released over the weekend showed an even larger lead for the Democratic nominee, with Clinton leading Trump 46 to 31 percent.

Just last week, prior to the Democratic convention, polling data had the two candidates tied at 42 percent support for each.

Clinton’s 4-point bounce following the convention is similar to those President Obama received in both 2008 and 2012.

A closer look at the new CBS poll also shows that 90 percent of voters surveyed said their minds were already made up about who they would cast their ballot for come November.

Third party candidates were also factored into the CBS polling, but neither Libertarian Gary Johnson or Green Party candidate had enough support from those polled to change the outcome of the final numbers. When the third parties were factored in, Clinton still beats Trump.

Clinton’s favorability numbers have also risen since the conventions concluded. Her favorability now stands at 36 percent with Trump at 31 percent.

Other breakdowns from the CBS poll show:

  • Clinton leads Trump among women, but Trump leads with male voters
  • Trump leads Clinton among white voters without a college degree while Clinton leads among the college educated
  • Clinton has the support of 80 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of those who said they had previously supported Bernie Sanders
