Finally! A Feminist Magazine To Get Girls Excited About Science – Kazoo Magazine (VIDEO)

In February, mother, Erin Bried was looking at kid’s magazines with her five-year-old daughter. She was disappointed to see that all of the magazines for girls were covered in princesses, makeup, and pink. They have articles such as “How To Have Good Manners” or “How To Do Your Hair.”

She was disappointed that they don’t have girl magazines with actual, substantial content. This gave her the idea for Kazoo Magazine. Her Kickstarter campaign for the project raised $171,000 in 30 days.

The first issue of the magazine shipped in August. It had everything Bried had been missing. They have a maze with Diana Nyad, who just celebrated her swim from Cuba to Florida. It also has recipes and other fun activities.

It doesn’t include any princesses. Bried is not an anti-princess, but she said:

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with princesses. I think pink is a beautiful color. I think it’s wrong when that’s the only thing we offer our kids.”

“I think it’s important for our daughters to see these amazing women role models. Strong women are underrepresented,  I’m trying to compensate for that.”

From Kazoo‘s About page:

“There’s no other magazine like Kazoo. All of our stories are either developed or inspired by top female artists, explorers, scientists, chefs, athletes, activists, writers and others. Regular features include: science experiments; comics; art projects; recipes; interviews with inspiring women from Olympic athletes to astronauts; and fun activities, like secret codes, jokes, mazes, search-and-finds and more.”

I love seeing programs like this for young girls. Being a former software engineer, I know it’s a male-dominated field. Young girls should get into science and engineering and mathematics. Some colleges even offer scholarships for women in these fields. Girls should be taught that they can be good at anything that they want to do.

Here is a video for the magazine:
