Let’s set the scene, it is the Miss America Competition. Camille Sims, Miss New York, was asked what she thought of her home state’s own Donald Trump. Her 20 second reply went like this:
“I think that he’s a bright reminder of how our country needs to come together. If you don’t agree with his message, then it’s time to decide where you stand in this debate.”
The seemingly diplomatic response did not end there and her direct dig at Trump became apparent with this,
“As Americans, we need to make sure that we come together, represent what it means to be American, which is celebrating all people from all backgrounds, whether you’re an immigrant, or a Native American, or an African American, or an Asian American.”
It would be difficult to equate what Sims said with what Trump stands for. Especially in the light of all he has said during his campaign thus far. This is the man who wants to ban people an entire religion from entering the United States, the same man who wants a wall and who has thrown all sorts of slurs at immigrants.
Camille, who wants to complete a masters in Human Rights, went on to come second runner up in the competition and her well considered answers, no doubt helped her to achieve this.
Trump is of course well connected to beauty pageants and he is someone who places a lot of importance on physical looks. It is disturbing to think someone as impulsive and childlike as Trump, is in the running to be president of the United States.
The consequences of having the likes of Trump in charge really needs to be deeply thought through. Please talk to any swinging voter between now and November! This is not a game. The inexperience alone of a man like Trump being president is frightening enough.
