So Today I Voted…I Voted For Him

This story first ran on the Being Liberal Medium blog and has been reprinted with permission of the author.

Today I voted… I voted for him.

Not the man running who sees women as an object. I didn’t vote for the man who grades women by their looks and how subservient they are, but for the man I’m raising to see women as equal humans he should respect and admire.

Today I voted… I voted for him.

Not for the man running who looks down on immigrants as something to fear and hate.

I didn’t vote for the man who ignores the fact that this country is all immigrants or natives who have had their land taken. I voted for the man I gave birth to that is a 5th generation American citizen born of Irish immigrants who came here to work, live, love, and wanted to be American so much they risked it all.

I voted for the man I’m raising to have compassion and show humanity to all people because he can’t forget he is born of someone who once was in their shoes.

Today I voted… I voted for him.

Not for the man whose adult life and campaign has thrived on bullying and hate mongering. I voted for the man I am raising to stand up to bullies.

I voted for the man in whom I will instill a fire that ignites him to stand up for his fellow human.

I voted for my little man who will see his fellow women/men as human beings he will embrace with love and understanding. I voted for the beautiful man I am raising to respect a woman’s choice for her own body… to stand up to a government that tries to tell her she has no say.
