Donald Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, is still allowed on television to dig the president a deeper hole.
This is great news for those of us on the left who have for a year been watching special council Robert Mueller squeeze the walls tighter around Trump and company.
Giuliani’s latest: admitting accusations of scandal surrounding the special council’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election is just a ruse to influence public opinion and reduce the likelihood of impeachment.
Sunday, Dana Bash on CNN‘s State of the Union accused Giuliani of complicity in Trump’s attempt to undermine the Mueller investigation.
Giuliani did not deny it, responding:
“Of course we have to do it to defend the president. It is for public opinion, because eventually the decision here is going to be impeach or not impeach. Members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, are going to be informed a lot by their constituents. And so our jury – and it should be – is the American people. So Republicans largely, many independents, even some Democrats now question the legitimacy of [the Mueller investigation]. Democrats I would suggest for their own self-interest, this is not a good issue to go into the midterms.”
In this circumlocution is an admission Trump is actively trying to discredit and ultimately destroy the investigation the president labels “Spygate.”
Trump tweeted Sunday that the investigation of alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign “devastated and destroyed young and beautiful lives.”
He nebulously added:
“They journeyed down to Washington, D.C., with stars in their eyes and wanting to help our nation…They went back home in tatters!”
Who is “they”?
On ABC’s This Week on Sunday,Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), ranking member of the House intelligence committee, said:
“This is part of the propaganda machine. Let’s spread a completely fallacious story and then say it needs to be investigated, and give it a life of its own.”
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) told NBC’s Meet the Press “Spygate” claims are a “diversion tactic, obviously.”
He added:
“There is concern that the president is laying the groundwork to [fire] Bob Mueller or [Deputy Attorney General Rod] Rosenstein. If that were to happen, obviously, that would cause a constitutional crisis.”
In just the first month of his tenure as Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani has already admitted the $130,000 in hush money adult film actress Stormy Daniels received from Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen came from Trump after the president and Cohen initially denied it. This lead to the president having to finally disclose up to $250,000 he reimbursed Cohen last year in the annual financial disclosure form he was required to submit to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics (OGE).
Earlier this month, Giuliani admitted Trump would have had Michael Cohen pay off women in addition to Daniels “if necessary, ”although he had “no knowledge” of any payments to other women.
On May 4, when asked about Giuliani’s embarrassing honesty, Trump responded:
“He [Giuliani] started yesterday. He’ll get his facts straight. It’s actually very simple, there has been a lot of misinformation really.”
No, no, keep talking, Rudy.
