Rapper Kendrick Lamar and President Obama Talk Politics



Rapper Kendrick Lamar recently visited the White House after receiving an invite from President Obama. Lamar’s latest video highlights his Pay It Forward  mentor program, which showcases his visit to the Oval Office.  Kind of a big deal, Lamar connected with the president on political issues that included a heart-to-heart conversation about the plight of inner-city youth.

Lamar, who hails from Compton, California, puts down tracks that align with the Black Lives Matter movement. His music calls for an end to police brutality in communities of color. Radical politics is President Obama engaging a voice of popular culture on real issues affecting everyday people.  When has a president taken such an interest in a young black man, doing his thing with art?

Strong mentoring programs can change lives. Lamar’s Pay It Forward program and other mentoring  programs bring people together to work towards a common good. In the SOTU address, President Obama reminded all Americans that no one achieves success entirely on their own.  The president’s words are a  perfect tie-in for Lamar’s program vision.

As an artist, Lamar reminds us that art and community engagement are powerful change agents when used together. Lamar has a story to share that involves hanging out with the president and the video footage to prove it.  President Obama and Kendrick Lamar sharing a moment  in the Oval Office and  vibing about current affairs is pretty cool stuff.
