As recently as December of last year, when he was asked about same-sex marriage and LGBT rights, 2016 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump remarked:

“I’m not in favor of gay marriage. I don’t feel right about marriage equality.”

Trump also said in an interview earlier this month that if elected President he would appoint judges who would be in favor of overturning the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell vs Hodges, telling Fox News:

“I would strongly consider that, yes.”

The man with a dead hamster atop his head has also dared to compare same-sex marriage to deciding which golf club a person uses:

“It’s like in golf. A lot of people — I don’t want this to sound trivial — but a lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive. It’s weird. You see these great players with these really long putters, because they can’t sink three-footers anymore. And, I hate it. I am a traditionalist. I have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay, but I am a traditionalist.”

All of that makes what Trump just told reporter Sue O’Connell when asked if we would see more progress on LGBT equality if he’s elected incredibly curious. It should be noted that O’Connell is a lesbian. Trump’s response to O’Connell’s question was:

“Well, you can. We’re going to bring people together, and that’s your thing, and other people have their thing. We have to bring all people together and if we don’t we’re not going to have a country anymore.”

Hmm. We can only wonder how the far right-wing nutjobs such as Jerry Falwell, Jr., who has endorsed Trump, will react to the Donald’s blatant pandering for the purpose of being palatable to voters in New Hampshire, where same-sex marriage is supported by 67 percent of the residents.

Just imagine the hue and cry that will be issuing forth from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and other conservatives who love to bash those that are the least bit different from them. Or will they hold their fire because they know they are so desperate to assure a GOP victory in 2016 that they will abide even such heresy as Trump just spoke?

Stay tuned. This could get interesting in a hurry.
