You may have heard GOP frontrunner Donald Trump say in recent days that he may just wind up having to sue fellow 2016 contender Ted Cruz for running ads detailing what Trump has said in the past about abortion.

The ad in question shows a 1999 interview in which Trump says he’s pro-choice, including opposing a ban on partial-birth abortion. As you might expect, that’s not a popular position for a Republican presidential candidate to hold. Trump says he has since changed his opinion on a woman’s right to choose.

And at a press conference earlier today, Cruz dared Trump to take legal action against him, saying:

“Even in the annals of frivolous lawsuits, this takes the cake. So Donald, I would encourage you — if you want to file a lawsuit challenging this ad, claiming it is defamation, file the lawsuit. It is a remarkable contention that an ad that plays video of Donald Trump speaking on national television is somehow defamation.”

Cruz also accused Trump of being able to dish out criticism but not accept it when it’s aimed at him:

“Whenever anyone does as this ad does, play the actual words that Donald Trump said on national television, his response is to yell, ‘Liar,'”

While he was at it, the Texas Senator also took some shots at Marco Rubio, lumping him together with Trump:

“Both of those campaigns, the only thing they can do is engage in insults and attacks.”

Referring to what Rubio has said about his record on the issue of immigration, Cruz also took this slap at Rubio:

“It’s unfortunate he hasn’t gotten the traction he wanted. Marco Rubio is behaving like Donald Trump with a smile.”

The race for the Republican nomination gets nastier by the minute, and any of these candidates will likely be so damaged by November that they have virtually no shot of contending against the Democratic nominee.
