Some surprising endorsements for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton might prove once and for all that the Democratic presidential candidate’s so-called email scandal is a big nothingburger to real cybersecurity experts.
While Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his pals at Fox News gnash their teeth over Clinton and her emails, a top cybersecurity expert has not just endorsed her, but held a fundraiser for her with other experts in the field.
Jeff Moss (aka “Dark Tangent”) is a luminary in the hacker world. He’s probably most well known as the founder of the BlackHat and Defcon hacker and security conferences. He is also a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council.
Now, this political independent has held what he thinks is BlackHat’s first-ever candidate fundraiser – and it’s for Hillary Clinton.
“Trump’s had enough time to demonstrate: ‘Here are the experts I’ve brought in. Here are my policy positions,’ he says. ‘I kept waiting for him to show off his business skills, with his experts and his white papers.’
Instead, Trump called on Russia to hack Hillary Clinton. Moss says if people at this conference ever made that call, the FBI would be at their door in a heartbeat.”
Moss is not the only member of the cybersecurity elite who has come out for Clinton. NPR notes that Facebook’s cybersecurity chief also attended the fundraiser. So did Tarah Wheeler who heads up security for Symantec.
She’s not just supporting Clinton, but seems to be considering becoming a Democrat. Wheeler, speaking as an individual, agreed to talk to NPR on the record:
“She says she’s the child of two agents of the National Security Agency, the government’s giant cyber spy. She’s also the author of the book Women in Tech.
Wheeler says she started out as a member of one party she wouldn’t identify, but this election is making her rethink her allegiances. And cybersecurity, she says, ought to be a major policy concern. Wheeler wants a leader who seeks out vastly different expert opinions. For her, that’s Clinton.“
Eat your heart out, Trumpers!
