CNN’s Jake Tapper isn’t having it. None of us are, but not all of us get the national platform enjoyed by Tapper. He launched an amazing tirade against the lie (aka alternative fact) that President Donald Trump continues to peddle regarding supposed “illegal voters” denying him a popular vote victory.
‘The Emperor Has No Facts’
Tapper opened The Lead today talking about Trump’s continued assertion that over three million and perhaps as many as five million people voted illegally on November 8, 2016, and that is why he lost the popular vote.
Trump stated this lie again in a meeting with congressional leaders yesterday. The New York Times reported:
“Voting officials across the country have said there is virtually no evidence of people voting illegally, and certainly not millions of them. White House officials did not respond to requests for a comment on Mr. Trump’s discussion of the issue.”
The Times, in fact, used the word “lie” in their headlines on the matter both yesterday and today.
Jake Tapper railed into Trump’s lies, saying:
“President Trump is claiming, and the White House is reaffirming, the fiction that millions of illegal votes were cast in the 2016 election. It is, empirically, a stunning allegation, one which the White House is providing no evidence. And there’s a reason they’re providing no evidence — there is no evidence. It is not true.”
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, already notable for whining about media coverage and lying about crowd sizes (period.) just four days into the new administration, has said that yes, Trump believes it to be true, but would not state whether or not he agreed with the president, even when asked.
“In fact, if there were even a fraction of the voter fraud that President Trump is alleging, he would be derelict not to order a major investigation. It would likely require a vast conspiracy involving public officials all over the country, and would likely have had far reaching impact in other contests, tainting raises down the ballot, not just the presidential race.”
Of course, as we all know, it’s not true. Trump knows it’s not true. He just can’t stand the fact that he lost the popular vote.
