Despite repeated denials over the weekend from the White House that President Trump is considering dismissing Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a new report from CNN suggests that Trump is growing impatient and may be willing to risk impeachment by firing Mueller.
According to CNN, Trump expects the Russia probe to end soon:
“Trump is boasting to friends and advisers that he expects Mueller to clear him of wrongdoing in the coming weeks, according to sources familiar with the conversations. The President seems so convinced of his impending exoneration that he is telling associates Mueller will soon write a letter clearing him that Trump can brandish to Washington and the world in a bid to finally emerge from the cloud of suspicion that has loomed over the first chapter of his presidency, the sources said.”
It remains unclear why exactly the president believes Mueller will conclude his investigation into the 2016 election and exonerate him.
Some aides to Trump fear that if the Russia matter drags on into 2018, the president will have a “meltdown” and risk impeachment by getting rid of Mueller:
“‘He’ll try and fire Mueller and then be impeached,’ this person predicted.”
This could prove to be a crucial week for the White House in the Russia investigation:
“There’s no indication from special counsel Robert Mueller or his team that the probe is in its final stages. A tipping point in the showdown could come as soon as this week when Trump’s private lawyers and Mueller meet, sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Trump’s team is hoping to get a clearer sense of Mueller’s next steps in the investigation, an assessment that could either pacify Trump or inflame him.”
Considering that Trump has such poor judgment in the first place, if he thinks the Russia probe may only be beginning, he could well make a hasty decision that winds up leading to his political demise.
